Minister Blaney Highlights Contract Awarded to Babcock Canada for Refit Work on Coast Guard Vessel CCGS Des Groseilliers

The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness and MP for Levis, Bellechasse and les Etchemins, on behalf of the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, and the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Public Works and Government Services, today announced that the Government of Canada has awarded a $4.5 million contract to Babcock Canada Inc for refit and Vessel Life Extension work on Canadian Coast Guard ship CCGS Des Groseilliers. The shipyard portion of the work will be carried out by Chantier Davie Canada Inc., a sub-contractor to Babcock Canada.
Based in Quebec City, the CCGS Des Groseilliers provides icebreaking services, search and rescue support, and Aid to Navigation services on the St. Lawrence River. The work to be undertaken includes replacement of the vessel''s generator sets, main engine block as well as the propulsion control system in order to enhance the vessel''s reliability to effectively complete program requirements for the next 10 years.
This contract is being awarded as part of the $360M investment to extend the life of the Coast Guard fleet . The National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy aims to support a vibrant Canadian shipbuilding industry by ensuring shipyards across the country can compete and benefit from Canada''s significant ongoing maintenance requirements while ensuring the best value for Canadian taxpayers.

- Work is scheduled to begin in November 2014 and be completed by May 2015.
- This is the second contract awarded by the Canadian Coast Guard this year to the partnership formed by Babcock and Chantier Davie. The first one was a $6.5 million contract for refit work on the CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent .
- As announced in Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government will extend the life of sixteen Coast Guard vessels and complete mid-life modernizations on an additional two existing hovercraft over the next 10 years.
