Update to Government of Canada Response to Drifting Foreign Vessel
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 10/18/14 -- As of 930 PST efforts continue to assist the Russian-flagged cargo ship Simushir, with 10 crew members onboard, located off the west end of Haida Gwaii.
The CCGS Gordon Reid successfully took the Simushir under tow at approximately 1830 PST on October 17th and began towing the vessel in a westerly direction. They are making good at about 1.5 knots and are located approximately 25 NM from the western coastline of Haida Gwaii. The tow operation has put increased distance between the stricken vessel and the shoreline, allowing time for other resources to arrive on scene and provide assistance.
The CCGS Sir Wilfrid Laurier and the USCG vessel Spar have arrived on scene to provide assistance as needed. Also, the ocean-going tug Barbara Foss continues toward the location.
An RCAF Cormorant helicopter, RCAF Buffalo aircraft and US Coast Guard Jayhawk helicopter remain on stand-by and have been prepositioned to Sandspit airport to provide air support.
Furthermore, the Canadian Coast Guard continues to take proactive measures to ensure that an environmental response plan is in place if required.
Diligent and coordinated support from all levels of government continue, with the focus on keeping everyone safe and bringing the situation to a successful conclusion.
