Golden Gate University Hosts Second Annual Women in Leadership Conversation
"Faith" and "Karma" Not Enough
(firmenpresse) - SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 10/14/14 -- ''s (GGU) Ageno School of Business hosts its second annual Women in Leadership event -- a panel discussion promoting women''s empowerment designed to nurture women as they become leaders -- on Wednesday, November 5, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.
Women in Leadership is part of GGU''s long history of supporting women in business, evidenced by the 1970s photo of women in a management seminar. GGU has been training women to become successful working professionals for nearly 100 years, since the first women enrolled in classes in the 1920s. Evelyn Pullens and Margaret Lyons Steffan were the first two female School of Law graduates, class of 1928.
"We''re sponsoring this conversation in order to help end the dearth of women in the top ranks of corporate America and stop sex discrimination," said Marianne Koch, Associate Dean of the Ageno School of Business. "Our panelists will share passionate stories to encourage women to build a strong tool kit filled with leadership know-how and support such as self-confidence, mentors, integrating their work and non-work lives, the ability to make tough decisions and more. We hope this event will promote success for women in leadership roles."
This is despite the fact that more than half of bachelor''s degrees are awarded to women. The male-driven culture often still practices both subtle and blatant sexism and discrimination in keeping women out of leadership''s top spots. For example:
Satya Nadella, Microsoft''s chief executive recently told a women''s conference that they should not ask for a raise, but trust "faith" and "karma" to reward them appropriately
Women still earn only 77 cents for every dollar men make
Only 21 women lead the top 500 companies by revenue
Worldwide, only 22 out of 197 heads of state are women
Women hold only 18 percent of U. S. Congressional offices
"It''s time to reverse this trend," says Paul Fouts, Dean of the Ageno School of Business, "and welcome more women into leadership."
