Golden Gate University Hosts Panel on Police Abuse of Authority and Increased Militarization

(firmenpresse) - SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 10/13/14 -- (GGU) School of Law and the Black Law Student Association (BLSA) will host "Police Abuse of Authority and Increased Militarization," a panel to examine the systemic abuse of authority by police officers, and the militarization of local and national police forces, on Wednesday, October 15.
The panel begins at 6 p.m. and includes:
Dewitt Lacy - attorney at the Law Offices of John L. Burris, a leading litigator on police misconduct throughout Northern California, including the infamous "Riders" case, which revealed the rampant misconduct of a gang of corrupt Oakland police officers
Lara Kiswani - Executive Director of the Arab Resource and Organizing Center who has played an active community organizer around issues of militarization of police forces, war, and immigrant rights
Rich Brunelle - former corrections officer and Court Litigation Coordinator with extensive experience in police organizations and how their militarization is deeply rooted in the war on drugs
Allyssa Villanueva - currently a UC Hastings student who has done extensive research studying the patterns and history of state lethal violence against Black victims and whose graduate thesis topic was entitled, "Police Terror and Anti-Black Genocide in the United States"
Nina Parks - an entrepreneur passionate about youth on probation, off-campus youth education and has created multiple community policing organizations throughout the Bay Area
The panel will be moderated by Adjunct Professor Cynthia Chandler, Director of at GGU School of Law, and Director of Justice Now, a human rights organization that wrote California SB 1135, which recently ended coerced sterilization of female inmates in California prisons.
"Police Abuse of Authority and Increased Militarization," is free, but space is limited. The panel takes place at GGU School of Law, at 536 Mission St., in Room 2203. Registration is not required.
