(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 10/10/14 -- The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, made the following statement today acknowledging the United Nation''s International Day for Disaster Reduction.

"The International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR) highlights the importance of including all members of society in taking action to reduce the risk of disasters.

"The theme for this year''s IDDR is ''Resilience is for Life.'' Resilience means the capacity of all citizens to cope and recover during an emergency. This year, the IDDR campaign focuses on engaging seniors in disaster risk reduction efforts - developing disaster mitigation plans that are inclusive to the special needs of seniors, giving seniors opportunities to engage in discussions and decision-making. From the tragedy at Lac-Megantic, to the recent floods in Alberta, Manitoba, Northern Ontario and New Brunswick, Canadians know all too well that disasters can have devastating effects on our communities. The tragic fire at L''Isle-Verte seniors'' residence in early 2014 demonstrates the importance of addressing the needs of vulnerable populations in emergency planning.

"While not all disasters can be prevented, we can strengthen the physical and social structures in our communities to reduce their impact, and improve our ability to recover from them. We applaud civic leaders and residents who are determined to build back their communities stronger than before.

"The Government of Canada supports engagement in disaster risk reduction across diverse sectors of society. To that end, Public Safety Canada will host the on October 21, 2014 in Toronto, Ontario. The Roundtable brings together various stakeholders and serves as a forum for Canada''s ongoing national dialogue on disaster risk reduction.
