Emerge.MD Telebehavioral Strategy Results in $36 Million Cost Avoidance
Behavioral Healthcare Providers (BHP), a Fairview Health Services Company, Successfully Utilizes Emerge.MD Telehealth Platform for Virtual Behavioral Care Strategy
(firmenpresse) - PHOENIX, AZ -- (Marketwired) -- 10/06/14 -- Emerge.MD, the only telehealth platform that can connect all the people processes and technology in virtual care, enabled virtual behavioral consults at Fairview Health Services'' emergency departments, which resulted in a 33% reduction in hospital admissions for patients exhibiting mental illness or chemical dependency. The reduction in inpatient admissions is estimated to have resulted in $36 million in cost avoidances for healthcare payors.
Emergency departments across the country often do not have behavioral health experts on staff around the clock. To address this shortage, Behavioral Healthcare Providers (BHP), a company owned by Fairview Health Services, provides outsourced behavioral health consults at several Minnesota hospitals. When patients exhibiting symptoms of mental trauma or chemical dependency enter an emergency department serviced by Behavioral Healthcare Providers, ED staff are able to use telemedicine carts and Emerge.MD''s OnePlace®, a browser-based workflow and collaboration tool, to connect the patients to remote, expert BHP behavioral assessors who provide recommendations for treatment.
"Emerge.MD is the essential tool that drives our telehealth service," says Amy Wrightson, operations director at Behavioral Healthcare Providers. "It connects our behavioral assessors face-to-face to the emergency department patients quickly and efficiently."
During a trial period of the service, the assessors recommended 52% of patients receive outpatient care, and reduced unnecessary inpatient admissions by an estimated 33%. BHP uses its network of 5,000 behavioral specialists in Minnesota to schedule the outpatient appointment before the patient leaves the emergency department, and performs follow-up over the next several days to remind the patient of the appointment.
Founded in 1995, Behavioral Healthcare Providers (BHP) is a non-profit subsidiary of Minnesota''s Fairview Health Services. BHP has established a network of more than 5,000 behavioral providers, programs and hospitals committed to improving the health of the communities it serves.
