Message from Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston on the Occasion of Mental Illness Awareness Week
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 10/05/14 -- Mental Illness Awareness Week, coordinated by the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health, gives us the opportunity to think about those who suffer, often in silence, from mental health problems, and to let them know that they have our support. Over the past four years, we have met a number of people who are struggling with a mental illness. These people generously agreed to share their stories-which were all powerful-and we learned a lot from them. We encourage all Canadians to take the time to learn more about mental illnesses, to reach out to those who are suffering and to listen to them.
In Canada, there are many signs that things are changing. During our visits, we have taken part in open and frank discussions. We have learned about new service delivery models in both urban and rural areas, innovative practices used to diagnose and treat mental illnesses, and extraordinary programs and tools. So there is hope.
In order to maintain our momentum and dialogue, we must continuously evolve our way of thinking and work to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness. We must also share practices, models and tools that work well so that everyone across Canada can benefit. Let us work hand in hand to build a smarter, more caring nation in which all citizens take their rightful place in society.
