MEDIA ALERT: New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division Hears Oral Arguments in Internationally-Renowned "Tommy" Chimpanzee Rights Case Filed by Nonhuman Rights Project (NhRP)

ID: 1306629

(firmenpresse) - ALBANY, NY -- (Marketwired) -- 10/01/14 --

WHAT:

WHEN:
Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2014
1 pm Eastern Time

WHERE:
New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Third Judicial Department
Empire State Plaza
Robert Abrams Building for Law and Justice
Madison Avenue
Albany, NY 12210

WHO:
A panel of five appellate court judges will hear oral arguments from the Nonhuman Rights Project led by Steven M. Wise.

WHY:
The "Tommy" case was originally filed in lower court (Albany, NY, Dec. 2013), along with two other chimpanzee rights cases also in New York. All three cases have advanced to the appellate courts, the Tommy appeal being the first to be heard after capturing worldwide attention in Dec. 2013.

SIGNIFICANCE OF OCT. 8 HEARING:
Although the court will not issue its decision that day, what takes place on Oct. 8 will indicate what the judges think about the case.

The appellate court has already issued a ruling indicating that they take Tommy''s case seriously. In July 2014, the court voted unanimously to grant a preliminary injunction that prevents Tommy''s owners from removing him from New York State pending the completion of the appeal or further order of the court. In order to obtain this injunction, the NhRP had to demonstrate that it was likely to prevail on the merits of the appeal. With this decision, the court has indicated that this appeal has a reasonable chance of success.

CASE NO., NAME:
Case No. 518336.
"THE NONHUMAN RIGHTS PROJECT, INC., on behalf of TOMMY, Petitioners-Appellants, v. PATRICK C. LAVERY, individually and as an officer of Circle L Trailer Sales, Inc., DIANE LAVERY, and CIRCLE L TRAILER SALES, INC., Respondents-Respondents."

IMPORTANT PRESS INFO.:
Steven Wise will make comments at the courthouse before entering at approximately 12:30 pm on Oct. 8, and at the conclusion of the hearing.

The hearing is open to the public and members of the print media.

A very limited number of interviews are available with Steven Wise prior to the hearing date. Interested media outlets should use the contact information below to schedule a pre-hearing interview.
