Digital Event to Launch Sightsavers'' Appeal to Help a Million See Again
Patient's Bandages Will Be Removed on World Sight Day
(firmenpresse) - NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwired) -- 10/01/14 -- Sightsavers, one of the world''s leading organizations working to eliminate avoidable blindness and restore sight in developing countries, announced today it will launch its A Million Miracles appeal with a historic Google+ digital event enabling viewers around the world to share in real time the journey of Mr. Winesi March from Malawi as he has his sight restored.
The appeal''s first ''miracle'' will be shared live around the world on Wednesday, October 8th at 8:30am EST, as the first ever live broadcast of a cataract surgery is streamed from rural Malawi. Broadcast live from Malawi on Google+ and on , See the Miracle is a two-day event that will follow 69-year-old Winesi, who has been completely blind for two years, as he travels to hospital for surgery to remove a cataract and that will give him sight again. Then, on World Sight Day, Thursday, October 9th at 8:30am EST, the global audience will share in the joyful moment as Winesi''s bandages are removed and he can see his baby grandson for the first time.
Globally, 20 million people, most of who live in developing countries, are living with cataract, a condition that causes sight to become blurred and gradually lost completely. However, cataracts are treatable with an operation that takes less than half an hour and costs Sightsavers just $50. This is the core message at the center of the three-year global appeal.
Dr Imran Khan, Sightsavers'' Chief Program Advisor, commented: "For just $50 we can make a blind person see. You can''t get a simpler or more powerful proposition than the miracle of sight restoration. We will focus the Million Miracles appeal on the stories of individuals whose sight we are saving, using innovative technology to bring supporters together with the people they are helping."
