Research that Helps Canadians Suffering from Mood Disorders to be Enhanced Thanks to Canada-European Union Trade Agreement
(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 09/26/14 -- During the official visit to Canada by Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council, and Jose Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, as part of a Canada-European Union (EU) Summit, the Mood Disorders Society of Canada once again stated that the research-boosting provisions in the Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) will help Canadians suffering from mental illnesses, particularly depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety and other related mood disorders.
"We strongly support the robust protections of intellectual property contained in the CETA because we believe that medical research concerning depression and bipolar disorder will increase and new treatments, including new pharmaceutical therapies, will be discovered," said Phil Upshall, National Executive Director of the Mood Disorders Society of Canada. "New treatments will help Canadians suffering from mental illness and boost the research and development side of Canada''s life sciences sector."
The Canada-EU CETA covers a broad array of IP rights reflecting emerging international standards. These stronger protections will support and encourage research and innovation and increase Canada''s global competitiveness - all key benefits to finding new medications and treatments for those affected by mental illness.
The Mood Disorders Society of Canada (MDSC) is a national, not for profit, consumer driven, voluntary health charity committed to ensuring that the voices of consumers, family members and caregivers are heard on issues relating to mental health and mental illness; and in particular with regard to depression, bipolar illness and other associated mood disorders.
Last October, Phil Upshall was part of the Prime Minister''s official delegation to Brussels when the Agreement-in-Principle toward a comprehensive trade agreement was first announced.
