More than 3,000 space professionals will gather in Toronto for the annual International Astronautical Congress (IAC) held September 29 to October 3 at the (MTCC). The Congress brings together leading researchers, scientists and engineers from academia to industry, and the heads of 30 space agencies to share knowledge and inspiration. The four-day conference will infuse nearly $8.8 million to the provincial economy through hospitality spending, making the IAC one of the largest events held at MTCC in 2014.

"Toronto is uniquely equipped to welcome people from all over the world," said Geoffrey Languedoc, executive director of the Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute (CASI) based in Ottawa, and a member of the International Astonautical Federation since 1962. "Ninety per cent of our Congress delegates are from outside Canada and we are confident that our international guests will be delighted with Toronto and our host venue, the Metro Toronto Convention Centre."

The International Astronautical Federation, the global organization with head quarters in France, places the annual Congress in member countries, this year working with CASI to mount the large-scale convention. The Government of Ontario has invested in the Congress as part of its commitment to advancing the aerospace industry in Ontario and in Canada within today''s knowledge-based economy.

Consistent with the cornerstone of space practice within a global community, collaboration is what successfully attracted the IAC to Toronto. Organizers had visited other Canadian sites but were impressed with the partnerships between Toronto Tourism, the City of Toronto, the provincial government and Metro Toronto Convention Centre, the only venue with the size and capacity to host the congress. More than is required to showcase innovations in the space industry, a dynamic area that will feature a Lockheed Martin life-size inflatable scale model of the Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle. As well, the Congress set up requires expansive space to accommodate its 20 parallel sessions, lecture areas, meeting rooms and informal knowledge exchange lounges. MTCC partners with Toronto''s Sony Centre, which will host the Congress'' opening ceremony featuring the Cirque du Soleil and Chris Hadfield, former commander of the International Space Station.

"Quality partnerships, such as the ones the Metro Toronto Convention Centre has forged with Tourism Toronto, various levels of government and neighbouring attractions, strengthens Toronto''s appeal as an international destination for major conventions such as the IAC," said MTCC President & CEO Barry Smith. "By working together, Toronto is much more competitive on the world stage."

During the planning phase earlier this year, Congress organizers were invited to taste a custom menu at the Chef''s Table, a private dining room located in the heart of the MTCC''s newly renovated kitchen.

has designed a menu that takes guests on a coast-to-coast culinary tour of Canada. "Delegates to the IAC 2014 are in for a real treat!" said Languedoc.

"We believe guests will have an easy experience getting to Toronto, a great experience while there and look forward to sharing Canadian hospitality with the world."
