Governor General to Visit Quebec''s North Shore
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 09/24/14 -- Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston will visit Quebec''s North Shore to take part in several official events and functions in the cities of Baie-Comeau, Sept-Iles and Fermont, from September 29 to October 1, 2014.
"Sharon and I are delighted to visit the North Shore region. During our time in Baie-Comeau, Sept-Iles and Fermont, we will visit cutting-edge, technological and world-renowned industries in the agriculture, hydroelectricity, mining and metals sectors, which play a central role in the region''s economic development. We will take the opportunity to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the City of Fermont, and we will have the honour of launching Maritime Week in Sept-Iles, during which we will inaugurate a naval monument to commemorate the 25th anniversary of HMCS Jolliet. We believe it is important to recognize innovative practices and new initiatives that encourage collaboration and, therefore, promote the establishment of economic partnerships between the public and private sectors in these three municipalities. Visit to Les Buissons Research Centre (CRLB)
Their Excellencies will visit the CRLB, which has led a genetic improvement program for potatoes since 1987. They will attend a presentation on the projects that the CRLB and Les Semences elite du Quebec are currently working on, and then a scientist will accompany them to an in vitro laboratory to see some plants. Since its creation, the centre has produced more than 15 varieties of potatoes, including Envol, which is found in Canada and the United States. The centre also conducts potato variety trials in Cuba, Brazil and Uruguay in order to test their disease resistance.
Founded in 1955 by the Ecole Superieure d''Agriculture in Sainte-Anne-de-La-Pocatiere, this centre became the property of Quebec''s department of agriculture in 1962. It helps to promote agriculture in the North Shore region. This research centre is one of the few North American research centres to be located this far north. Visit to the Daniel-Johnson Dam and Manic-5 Generating Station
Their Excellencies will visit the hydroelectric facilities at the longest multiple-arch-and-buttress dam in the world, located 214 kilometres north of the city of Baie-Comeau and built across the Manicouagan river valley.
The dam is 214 metres high and 1 314 metres long across the crest. It has 13 arches and 14 buttresses, and was inaugurated in 1969. The power station was put into service in 1970-1971. The combined power of the two power stations (Manic-5 and Manic-5 PA) is 2 660 MW, which makes it the third largest site in Hydro-Quebec''s production system. The Manicouagan reservoir has a volume of 140 billion cubic metres of water, which makes it one of the largest freshwater reservoirs in the world. For more information, visit .

The Governor General will be welcomed upon his arrival by Pierre Gagnon, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Port of Sept-Iles, who will discuss the North Shore port authority''s operations and the activities it leads. At 11:15 a.m., Their Excellencies, accompanied by the President and CEO, and by Carol Soucy, Chairman of the Board for the Sept-Iles Port Authority, will launch Maritime Week in Sept-Iles (September 29 to October 5) on Quai Mgr-Blanche.
Celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2014, the Port of Sept-Iles is the largest ore-handling port in North America, with over 30 million tons of merchandise annually. Discussion on the Suicide Prevention Program with Her Excellency Sharon Johnston
Mrs. Johnston will speak with suicide prevention program specialists and patients, and with representatives from the Centre de sante et de services sociaux de Sept-Iles and the Centre de prevention du suicide de la Cote-Nord to learn more about the measures that have been put in place to lower the region''s suicide rate. Their Excellencies place a great deal of importance on physical and mental health. Throughout their mandate, they have added their voices to national efforts aimed at reducing the stigma of mental illness and showing that it a question of health, just like any physical illness.

Visit to Aluminerie Alouette
Their Excellencies will be welcomed by Claude Boulanger, President and Chief Executive Officer, and by Claude Gosselin, Vice-President of Operations and Maintenance at Aluminerie Alouette, who will then give them an overview of the company''s operational and production activities. Their Excellencies will then visit the electrolysis section, the factory''s largest section, with 594 vats used to produce primary aluminium, and the casting centre, which is where the final step in the aluminium manufacturing process takes place before shipping.

Official Inauguration of a Naval Monument in Honour of the 25th anniversary of Her Majesty''s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Jolliet and Presentation of the Caring Canadian Award
As part of Maritime Week in Sept-Iles, Their Excellencies will inaugurate a naval monument to commemorate the 25th anniversary of HMCS Jolliet, 22nd Canadian Naval Reserve Division. The Mayor of Sept-Iles and representatives from the Port of Sept-Iles and the Royal Canadian Navy will also attend this event, at which the Governor General will deliver an address.
During this same ceremony, Their Excellencies will meet citizens from the community of Sept-Iles and His Excellency will present the Governor General''s Caring Canadian Award to six deserving volunteers. The recipients'' names and citations will be published at a later date. Created in 1995, this award recognizes living Canadians and permanent residents who have made a significant, sustained, unpaid contribution to their community, in Canada or abroad. Often working behind the scenes, these individuals volunteer their time and efforts to help their fellow citizens. The name of HMCS Jolliet is taken from Louis Jolliet, the great explorer and cartographer. Since its inauguration in 1989, HMCS Jolliet has been the training centre for nearly 500 Royal Canadian Navy officers and non-commissioned officers, many of whom have taken part in dozens of missions in Canada and around the world.

Discussion with Members of the Huntington Disease Working Group
Huntington disease is a serious, hereditary, neurological disorder that results in the progressive development of significant cognitive problems, mental symptoms and problems with movement. A parent with the disease has a 50 percent chance of transmitting it to his or her child. Their Excellencies will meet with Dr. Sylvain Chouinard, a neurologist at the CHUM Hopital Notre-Dame, and with members of the Uauitshitum, the ITUM and the Sept-Iles health and social services centres to learn about the research currently being done and the many challenges they face.

Visit to the ArcelorMittal Mines Canada Mont-Wright Mining Complex
Upon their arrival, Their Excellencies will be welcomed by Steve Wood, President and Chief Executive Officer of ArcelorMittal Mining Canada, and by Bernard Laflamme, Director General of the Mont-Wright mine, who will give them an overview of the mining activity taking place and of the Port-Cartier expansion project. Afterwards, Their Excellencies will have the opportunity to visit the open-pit mine, which extends over 24 square kilometres, its train loading system and its concentrator, which was inaugurated in 2013 and now allows the company to produce 24 million tons of iron ore concentrate annually.
