The Purple Elephant Campaign Raising Awareness for Alzheimer's

(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 09/16/14 -- The Purple Elephant Campaign (PEC), a not-for-profit organization with a mandate to increase awareness and understanding of Alzheimer''s disease across all levels of society, has collaborated with the CN Tower to light up the tower purple during World Alzheimer''s Day on September 21st.

In Canada alone, more than half million people suffer from Alzheimer''s disease each year and the stigma associated with the disease is often negative for both the patients and their families. Many misconceptions about Alzheimer''s and dementia exist, including the one that these conditions are normal part of aging. In efforts to both increase awareness of the disease and help reduce its stigma the PEC has launched a number of awareness campaigns across a number of platforms which also include social media initiatives aimed at the younger generation.

This September, the PEC takes its awareness to a higher level as they collaborate with CN Tower to light the tower purple in recognition of World Alzheimer''s day.

"This is a huge step for a young not-for-profit organization such as ours," stated Caitlin Johnston the Executive Director of the PEC. "The PEC team is excited to do its part for World Alzheimer''s Day and to highlight Canada''s largest pinnacle purple. We are hoping that this will raise awareness for both the disease and our organization''s efforts."

This will be first time the CN Tower will be lit purple, the international color associated with Alzheimer''s disease for World Alzheimer''s Day.

About World Alzheimer''s Day:

World Alzheimer''s Day, September 21st of each year, is a day on which Alzheimer''s organizations around the world concentrate their efforts on raising awareness about Alzheimer''s and dementia. Alzheimer''s disease is the most common form of dementia, a group of disorders that impairs mental functioning. Alzheimer''s disease is often called a family disease, because the chronic stress of watching a loved one slowly decline affects everyone. Alzheimer''s disease cannot be cured, prevented or even slowed.
