When wine becomes the hero: The Tian Winebar brings a breeze of New York to Vienna
Whether it’s Bono, Woody Allen or Bruce Willis – Alexander Adlgasser, known as “The Grape”, knows all the secret wine preferences of the celebrities. As head sommelier at the awarded vegetarian gourmet restaurant Tian in Vienna Adlgasser creates authentic highlights since 2012. One example for his love of details: He writes the expansive wine list with 315 counted exquisite wines by hand.

The Tian Winebar, opened in 2013, is located at the basement of the gourmet restaurant and captivates its guests with an opulent optic: inviting fabric sofas colored in bordeaux red, beaded curtains defining the walls and a high-tech lighting concept ensures an elegant atmosphere. Tian Winebar is also perfectly suited to exclusive events and business meetings.
Fingerfood deluxe and noble wine tastings
The handwritten wine list offers wine connoisseurs a high class selection of Austrian and international wines. The wine will also be accompanied by delicious finger food like Tartes flambées and selected cheese platters, which are delivered weekly according to personal recommendations of MaÎtre Bernard Antony. At the special event series “Experience Wine Taste” high class wine growers and head sommelier Alexander Adlgasser invite wine fanciers to an exclusive tasting to enjoy together with the experts the pleasures of the exquisite wines.
Adlgasser “The Grape” – a sommelier for life
“At the Tian Winebar wine is the hero and not even the best cuisine should distract the attention on that”, says head sommelier Alexander Adlgasser. He lived in New York City for a long time, where he spoiled celebrities like Bono, Bill Clinton, Bruce Willis or Woody Allen with his wines to bring Austrian wines into the scene. Adlgasser calls himself “The Grape” and organizes the winery for the exclusive hotel Weissenseerhof in Carinthia, too.
Opening in autumn 2014, Adlgasser will also be responsible for the wine list of the new sister restaurant Tian in Munich. His high standards are reflected in the high class wine collection: “I only want the best wines to be served, whether it’s a wine from Bordeaux, Alsace or Burgenland, uncorked, well-tempered or if necessary decanted”, says Adlgasser.
