Reminova Ltd. Create a Mild "Time Warp" to Encourage Tooth Self-repair – Could This be the Future of Dentistry?
King's College London's Reminova Ltd. are developing a new device that could absolutely revolutionize dentistry.
(firmenpresse) - Tooth time travel may not be as far fetched as it seems. Enter the work of King’s College London’s Reminova Ltd., who have worked hard to create a device that through mild electrical stimulation is proving to “bring teeth back in time”, re-mineralize them and potentially reverse tooth decay. To say this has dentists excited is quite the understatement.
“The way we treat teeth today is not ideal – when we repair a tooth by putting in a filling, that tooth enters a cycle of drilling and re-filling as, ultimately, each “repair” fails,” commented Dental Institute Professor Nigel Pitts. “Not only is our device kinder to the patient and better for their teeth, but it’s expected to be at least as cost-effective as current dental treatments. Along with fighting tooth decay, our device can also be used to whiten teeth.”
With close to two and a half billion people suffering from tooth pain every year, Reminova’s approach to the problem using electricity to accelerate the tooth’s natural healing process, rather than relying on drills, needles or drugs certainly has wide appeal.
Reminova uses a two step process, first preparing the damaged outside of the tooth on the enamel and the following through using a small electric charge to push healing minerals into the tooth itself. The level of electricity used is much tinier than that already utilized in dentist procedures, is completely safe and can’t be felt by the patient at all.
With the trials ongoing the estimate is Reminova’s method, called Electrically Accelerated and Enhanced Remineralisation (EAER), will hit the market within three years.
Reminova will be based in Perth, Scotland. Basing their business of the academic and research work of King’s College Dental Institute Professor’s such as Nigel Pitts, they anticipate being a quick financial success. The company is now seeking private investors to help bring their Electrically Accelerated and Enhanced Remineralisation device to market.
