Germany-based consultancy aviationexperts examines the punctuality of airlines

(firmenpresse) - Dreieich/Germany, May 13, 2014. Around 20 percent of all flights are delayed. This is the result of an investigation of the Frankfurt-based business consulting company aviationexperts PCS, in which the tracking data of around 20 million flights worldwide and 130 airlines from the year 2013 were taken in account. An optimization of internal processes can help the airlines improve their on-time performance.

Delays not only bring trouble for the affected passengers. They also mean a large cost factor for airlines through the higher fuel consumption, delayed ground processes or compensations for passengers. On the one hand external influences such as the weather or unforeseen events at the start and destination airport affect the punctuality. On the other hand, the internal processes of the airline play a major role. "We at aviationexperts see the area of operations control as a key factor for the on-time performance with a direct leverage to economic efficiency. Therefore, we have placed a special emphasis on the determination of the efficiency this area. An optimized operations control area can help the airline to improve on-time performance and thus increase its profitability." says Benjamin Walther, CEO of the international technology and management consulting company aviationexperts.

The study reveals a global average of 79 percent of flights being on time. In reverse, this figure outlines 21 percent of all flights being the source of additional cost necessary to reconcile these deviations and return to the status of normal operations. Asia comes in last with more than 25 percent of delays whereas in Europe the situation with only 15 percent is not so tense. Airlines in Canada, the US and Mexico face the highest cancellation (two percent) and diversion (0.2 percent) rate. The survey has been created by using flight tracking data provided by flightstats.com. It contains on-time performance, delay and cancellation rates of airlines from all major regions around the globe. In addition, a global analysis provides insights and comparisons regarding cancellations, excessive delays, low-cost versus legacy carriers, European regional airlines, global top and worst performers as well as global alliances.
