ID: 1290578

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 12/12/13 -- Today the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, marked the tenth anniversary of Public Safety Canada, the department created to ensure coordination across federal departments and agencies responsible for national security and the safety of Canadians.

"The world has changed a great deal these past ten years, with a range of issues from natural disasters to violent extremism evolving and requiring more complex, integrated approaches and solutions. Public Safety Canada provides an important coordination role to keep Canadians safe, and to help build a stronger, more resilient Canada," said Minister Blaney. "The Department has provided national leadership in the development and implementation of policies, plans and a range of programs. These efforts strengthen Canada's emergency management system, create a sustainable policing model for the future, secure our borders and facilitate trade, address terrorism, secure our cyber networks and critical infrastructure, strengthen our criminal and justice systems and support crime prevention efforts."

Public Safety Canada manages the Public Safety portfolio consisting of five agencies (the Canada Border Services Agency, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, the Correctional Service Canada, the Parole Board of Canada and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police) and three review bodies (the Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP, the Office of the Correctional Investigator and the RCMP External Review Committee), all reporting to the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness.

Public Safety Canada also cultivates strong partnerships with allies from across the globe, and works closely with other levels of government, first responders, community groups and the private sector, on national security, border strategies, countering crime, emergency management issues and other safety and security initiatives.
