Canadian Army Troops Return Home from UN Mission in Haiti
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 11/26/13 -- A Canadian Army infantry platoon returns to Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Valcartier, Quebec today after a five-month deployment with a Brazilian battalion supporting the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH). The infantry platoon and four staff officers from the 2nd Canadian Division deployed to Port-au-Prince, Haiti in June.

This deployment has been an excellent opportunity to deepen our defence relationship with the Brazilian Armed Forces and further strengthens the connection between our people," said The Hon. Rob Nicholson, Minister of National Defence. "The contribution of the Canadian Armed Forces to peace and stability in Haiti illustrates the Government of Canada's commitment and our soldiers' readiness to respond to international crises."
Since arriving in Haiti, the infantry platoon conducted check point security, security patrols, convoy escorts and provided site and route security and acted as a stabilizing influence in their area of responsibility. The platoon also carried out civil-military cooperation projects, such as the provision of clean water in neighbourhoods vulnerable to cholera.

I could not be more impressed with the work that they have accomplished in Haiti," said Lieutenant-General Marquis Hainse, Commander of the Canadian Army. "They helped establish a more secure and stable environment, and with their expertise, professionalism and commitment, made a successful contribution to the mission."
Canada continues to build on the relationship forged with Brazil by the Canadian infantry platoon through the deployment of four Canadian staff officers over the next year to augment the Brazilian battalion's headquarters (HQ) staff. The first two staff officers from the 2nd Canadian Division departed on Sunday from CFB Valcartier for a six-month rotation. Upon the completion of their mission, they will be replaced by two other staff officers for the same duration. These two staff officers join five Canadian military staff officers already deployed to Haiti as part of MINUSTAH HQ staff on Operation HAMLET. There are also approximately 90 Canadian civilian police officers serving with the United Nations in Haiti.

Canada has played a significant role in MINUSTAH since it was established in 2004, with a senior Canadian Armed Forces officer acting as Chief of Staff to the MINUSTAH Force Commander. This mission has been critical in stabilizing the security situation in Haiti and has made important contributions to the Caribbean nation by assisting with the conduct of elections, building up institutional capacity and developing a more effective police force, legal system and correctional service.
