Minister Nicholson Meets with U.S. Secretary of Defense, Signs Cooperation Framework on Asia-Pacific Defense Policy
(firmenpresse) - HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA -- (Marketwired) -- 11/22/13 -- The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of National Defence, and the U.S. Secretary of Defense, Chuck Hagel, met today on the margins of the Halifax International Security Forum (HISF) in Halifax, Nova Scotia to discuss the Canada-U.S. defence relationship, and sign the Canada-U.S. Asia-Pacific Defense Policy Cooperation Framework.

"Defence relations between our two countries are strong, and our friendship is steadfast. Meetings like the one today allow us to address the important issues we face together and serve to strengthen the unique connection between our two countries," he added. "The Canada-U.S. Asia-Pacific Defense Policy Cooperation Framework is a natural extension of this unique connection and demonstrates both the strength of our defence partnership and our countries' shared commitment to security and stability in the Asia-Pacific region."
Most recently, both Canada and the U.S. are demonstrating their ongoing commitment to the Asia-Pacific region by contributing significant resources to humanitarian and relief efforts in the Philippines following Typhoon Haiyan.
During the bilateral meeting, Minister Nicholson and Secretary Hagel also discussed important areas of interest for the Canada-U.S. defence relationship, including the future of continental defence cooperation and our partnership within the hemisphere, and shared global defence and security concerns.
Minister Nicholson and Secretary Hagel also discussed the importance of the Asia-Pacific region. Following the meeting, Minister Nicholson and Secretary Hagel signed the Canada-U.S. Asia-Pacific Defense Policy Cooperation Framework. The Framework will enhance the coordination of Canadian and American engagement activities in the Asia-Pacific region, build capability and capacity amongst Asian partners by coordinating training activities and exercises, and support regional forums to strengthen dialogue and cooperation.
The Halifax International Security Forum (HISF) is a prestigious international event that brings together key thinkers, policymakers, and practitioners from like-minded nations around the world to discuss ideas and share insights on important global security challenges.
The United States is Canada's most important ally and defence partner. Defence and security relations between our two countries are based on common values, shared histories and a culture of military cooperation and interoperability. Canada's defence partnership with the United States facilitates the fulfillment of the three roles for the Canadian Armed Forces outlined in the Canada First Defence Strategy: defending Canada, defending North America, and contributing to international peace and security.
