Governor General to Visit Montreal to Discuss Philanthropy and Recognize Acts of Giving
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 11/22/13 -- His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will be in Montreal, Quebec, on November 26, 2013.
The Governor General will start the day by presenting the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award to 10 volunteers of the PalliAmi Foundation working alongside end-of-life patients at the Palliative Care Unit of Hopital Notre-Dame, part of the Centre hospitalier de l'Universite de Montreal. The recipients' names and citations are included below.
That evening, the Governor General will address members of the Jeune Chambre de commerce de Montreal and participate in a round-table discussion on ways of encouraging young professionals to become more involved in their communities through philanthropy and volunteerism-two themes at the heart of the My Giving Moment multimedia campaign launched in early November. The campaign, inspired by His Excellency, is part of an ongoing effort to promote giving among Canadians and build a smarter, more caring nation. For more information on this campaign, please visit .

Round-table Discussion on Corporate Philanthropy Hosted by the Jeune Chambre de commerce de Montreal, in Collaboration with BMO
His Excellency will address members of the Jeune Chambre de commerce de Montreal, a network of young adults between the ages of 18-40, whose mission is the development of young business people in Montreal. Following his opening address, the Governor General will participate in a round-table discussion on how to encourage young professionals to take a more active role in their communities through time, talent or money, thus contributing to a smarter and more caring country. CARING CANADIAN AWARD RECIPIENTS AND CITATIONS
Loretta Amabili-Boileau
Boucherville, Quebec
Loretta Amabili-Boileau has been socially involved since the 1990s. She established a support group for 14- to 17-year-olds and volunteered with the Carrefour Le Moutier, a centre for individuals dealing with psychological distress. She has been with the PalliAmi Foundation since 1997, and looks after purchasing and cataloguing specialized works in all end-of-life related fields. Her humility, simplicity and good humour have opened the hearts of numerous patients and colleagues.
Monique Bernard
Longueuil, Quebec
Monique Bernard joined the PalliAmi Foundation in 1993, and is still there 20 years later. During that time, she also looked after a friend with Alzheimer's, for a period of 10 years. Her extensive experience as a companion and her incomparable sense of humour have earned her the respect and friendship of those who have had the pleasure of her acquaintance over the years.
Pierre Bourgeois
Longueuil, Quebec
Pierre Bourgeois has volunteered extensively for causes close to his heart. For over 10 years, he has participated in the weekly dinners of the Little Brothers of the Poor and has visited seniors in their homes. He has also been involved with the association Du Quebec a Compostelle, which supports pilgrims on the Way of St. James. Since 1998, he has been an active volunteer at the PalliAmi Foundation. His humanity and his unconditional generosity have served him in good stead as a companion not only to many end-of-life patients, but also to their loved ones.
Andree Clermont
Montreal, Quebec
When she retired in 1999, Andree Clermont started volunteering at the Maison du Pere homeless shelter, where she learned that the slightest gesture of kindness - of listening or lending a helping hand - holds immeasurable value. Since 2000, she has met weekly with groups of seniors, to familiarize them with computers and the Internet. She joined the PalliAmi Foundation in 2000, where she serves as a companion to end-of-life patients and their loved ones. Her extensive life experience, her empathy, her humour, and her readiness to devote her time have helped to brighten the last days of numerous patients.
Kathleen Mahony
Montreal, Quebec
Kathleen Mahony is a hairdresser by profession. She decided to volunteer her expertise and her experience to cancer patients as part of the Canadian Cancer Society's Look Good Feel Better program, which helps patients to look their best and feel better about themselves. As a volunteer for the PalliAmi Foundation since 1982, she has helped to give patients at the Palliative Care Unit of Hopital Notre-Dame a more positive self-image and boost their self-esteem. She is an example of caring, listening, discretion and empathy. She is someone who changes the world one day and one smile at a time.
Marcel Pennors
Montreal, Quebec
Marcel Pennors has been volunteering in his community for a long time. In Brest, France, he set up a dormitory for people with no fixed address. During his military service, he taught young repatriates from Algeria. In Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire, he set up a canteen in a poor neighbourhood. He has been involved with the PalliAmi Foundation since 1987, where his knowledge and readiness to devote his time make him an outstanding volunteer.
Luc Racine
Montreal, Quebec
Luc Racine joined the PalliAmi Foundation in 1992. In addition to his weekly volunteering, he has set up a video library for patients and their loved ones. He also looks after cataloguing, loans and returns of material from the Foundation specialized library. He has also served as the secretary for meetings of the PalliAmi Foundation board.
Michel Rivard
Laval, Quebec
Michel Rivard has been a volunteer at the PalliAmi Foundation since 1994. His compassionate listening skills, patience, discretion and natural empathy have afforded him unique experiences with patients of the Notre-Dame Hospital Palliative Care Unit. He is a man of great talent, and has produced a sculpture, Shock Waves, describing the stages of reaction to bad news. The work will be used to advertise a forthcoming exhibition to benefit the Canadian Cancer Society.
Martine Roy
Montreal, Quebec
Martine Roy has been volunteering since 1994, when she went to work alongside Mother Teresa to help sick and dying women in India. She went back in 2002, to assist teachers at a school for students with intellectual and physical disabilities. In 2003, she joined the PalliAmi Foundation, where her empathetic listening and involvement have helped many patients to live their last moments surrounded by warmth and respect.
Joel Roy
La Prairie, Quebec
Joel Roy started volunteering in his village at the age of 12, as the organist and conductor of a children's choir that performed concerts to benefit causes dear to his heart. Later, he visited seniors as a volunteer with the Institut universitaire de geriatrie de Montreal, and also became a member of the Association des benevoles accompagnateurs-accompagnatrices des personnes atteintes du SIDA, a volunteer group of companions of people living with AIDS. In 2000, he joined the PalliAmi Foundation and sees his involvement with end-of-life patients as a privilege.
About the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
Created in 1995, the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award recognizes living Canadians and permanent residents who have made a significant, sustained, unpaid contribution to their community, in Canada or abroad. Often working behind the scenes, these individuals volunteer their time and efforts to help their fellow citizens.
