Maker Movement Coming to Schools in BC
Maker Days re-claim the human spirits' desire to create, innovate, play and tinker
(firmenpresse) - VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwired) -- 11/20/13 -- Maker Day debuted at (ILC) November 2, 2013, where educators designed and tinkered to explore how 'making' can be integrated into elementary classrooms. The will be piloting at elementary and high schools in BC starting early December 2013.
The Maker movement encourages a shift in learning, helping educators introduce working with their hands and trades and technology to students as young as five.
Dedicated Maker Days will integrate more hands-on learning opportunities into the education system and encourage invention, prototyping, and experimenting.
"Many kids don't have garages or basements and have never had the opportunity to hold tools or operate equipment", says Susan Crichton, director Innovative Learning Centre, UBC Okanagan. "Maker Days in our classrooms are an opportunity to re-claim the human spirits' desire to create, innovate, play and tinker."
"As we encourage more youth to enter skilled trades and apprenticeship, Maker Days are a great way to introduce practical skills in classrooms and foster future problem solvers, creators, innovators, and skilled tradespeople," says Erin Johnston, director Training Delivery, Industry Training Authority (ITA). "Learning by doing is at the heart of apprenticeship."
At Maker Days, students will be introduced to design thinking, inquiry, and experiential learning through small group design challenges. Participants draw from a bank of materials and resources to collaboratively and creatively imagine, design, prototype, tinker, and share the groups' solution to a design challenge.
On Wednesday, November 20, ITA is hosting a "Youth Day" conference in Vancouver for educators on Sharing Best Practices and Innovative Approaches for Youth Trades Programs. "Taking Making into Schools" will be the key note address.
