Canada Distributes Humanitarian Assistance for Filipinos Affected by Typhoon Haiyan
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 11/19/13 -- Since Typhoon Haiyan slammed into the Philippines, Canada has responded quickly and efficiently to address escalating humanitarian needs. Today, the Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of International Development and Minister for La Francophonie announced how the $20 million Canada committed has been allocated to aid those in need.
"Canada continues to be deeply concerned for the people of the Philippines, who are in desperate need of assistance after the devastating impact of Typhoon Haiyan," said Minister Paradis. "Millions of people are struggling, and Canada's support is providing food, water, sanitation, emergency shelter, and protection to those affected."
The overall impact of Typhoon Haiyan is still emerging as responders continue to reach affected areas. Although assessment teams are providing an overview of humanitarian needs in accessible areas, logistical constraints have impeded full-scale rapid humanitarian assessments to date. Canada is doing its part to help those affected areas at the request of the Philippine government. The number of people affected is estimated to be as high as 13 million, of whom about 4 million are known to be displaced. Also, more than 1 million houses are reported to be damaged or destroyed.

International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) - $2 million
Canada's support will help address the immediate needs of 500,000 typhoon-affected people through the provision of:
International Organization for Migration (IOM) - $2 million
Canada's support will help address the immediate camp coordination and camp management needs of nearly 450,000 typhoon-affected people by:
United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) - $4 million
Canada's support will help address immediate food assistance to 2.5 million typhoon-affected people and logistical support to the humanitarian relief operations through the provision of:
United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) - $3 million
Canada's support will help address the emergency water, sanitation and hygiene, nutrition, child protection, and psychosocial support needs of 450,000 typhoon-affected people through the provision of:
United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) - $800,000
Canada's support will help meet the health needs of an estimated 660,000 displaced people by the typhoon through:
United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) - $200,000
Canada's support will help the OCHA coordinate the humanitarian relief operations in cooperation with the Government of the Philippines and other humanitarian partners through:

Canada's support will help provide emergency health care to as many as 200,000 typhoon-affected people in Tacloban City, northern Cebu, and eastern Samar, among other affected areas, to be determined based on ongoing assessment through the provision of:
Oxfam Canada - $1.5 million
Canada's support will help provide safe water and sanitation facilities to 42,500 typhoon-affected people (8,500 families) in Samar province through the provision of:

Canada's support will help provide emergency shelter, safe drinking water, essential household items, and health and hygiene sensitization to 57,500 typhoon-affected people in Leyte province through the provision of:

Canada's support will help provide critical water, sanitation and hygiene, education, and child-protection services to approximately 21,150 typhoon-affected people in Leyte province and Roxas city, Capiz province, through the provision of:

Canada's support will help provide emergency temporary essential household items, essential hygiene items, and psychosocial support for children and women among 50,000 people in the regions of Leyte, including Tacloban city, Samar, Capiz, including Roxas city, Iloilo, Aklan, and northern Cebu, through the provision of:

Today, the Government of Canada outlined the details of the $20 million in support of humanitarian organizations striving to meet the needs of the people affected by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. Emergency relief activities will include the provision of emergency shelter, food, water and sanitation, health care, protection and other essential services.
