Ecclesiastical Insurance Urges Everyone to Participate in Bullying Awareness Week
(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 11/18/13 -- Whether it's up close and physical - in school, after school or at home - or whether it's carried out through social media and text messaging, bullying is an escalating problem that can have devastating lifelong effects.
Citing research undertaken by the University of Warwick and Duke University Medical Center, Colin Robertson, Ecclesiastical's Vice President, Operations and Risk Control, points out that physical illness, behavioural and mental health issues, poor interpersonal relationships, and employment issues are among the devastating problems faced in adulthood by victims of childhood bullying.
"To quote the researchers," Robertson says, "'being bullied is not a harmless rite of passage but throws a long shadow over affected people's lives'. Given its long term societal effects, we must recognize that bullying is a community problem, one that needs the active commitment of everyone in the community to combat it."
Ecclesiastical has reached out to its broker partners and customers, urging them to support Bullying Awareness Week, November 17-23, and reminding them that in addition to implementing comprehensive anti-bullying education and prevention strategies in schools, we must all work together to foster a positive culture-an environment based on respect and inclusivity-in all our institutions, neighbourhoods and communities of interest.
As a national corporate sponsor of Kids Help Phone, Ecclesiastical is funding the clinical knowledge and counseling practices program related to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered and Questioning (LGBTQ) youth. Studies have shown that LGBTQ youth often perceive themselves as different prior to adolescence and face numerous challenges and risks throughout their development. Ecclesiastical's support will help create customized tools and enhanced web content about sexual orientation and gender identity. It will also fund in-depth training to ensure that counselors are familiar with clinical best practices in this evolving area.
