Canadian Military Personnel and Equipment Leave Trenton for the Philippines

ID: 1283012

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 11/13/13 -- A Royal Canadian Air Force aircraft carrying personnel and equipment deploying as part of the Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) to the city of Iloilo in the Philippines left this evening from 8 Wing Trenton, Ontario.

The CC-177 Globemaster III aircraft was loaded with engineering vehicles and equipment to support DART activities and DART personnel. It is destined for the city of Iloilo at the request of the Government of the Philippines. Located on the island of Panay, Iloilo is a location where numerous people have been heavily affected by Typhoon Haiyan.

"We are committed to helping the people of the Philippines as they recover from this terrible disaster," said the Hon. Rob Nicholson, Minister of National Defence. "We continue to send, in as rapid a manner as possible, the equipment, supplies and personnel who can provide help to the people who have been affected by Typhoon Haiyan. Earlier today, 43 members of the DART arrived in Iloilo."

The decision to deploy to Iloilo is based on the assessment and recommendations of the interdepartmental assessment team who are in the Philippines already, in addition to the request by the Government of the Philippines. This assessment, based on information derived from discussions with the Government of the Philippines as well as other organizations involved in the humanitarian effort, will also help determine what needs the Government of Canada can fill and what personnel, supplies and equipment should deploy as part of the DART.

The DART is a multidisciplinary military organization designed to deploy on short notice anywhere in the world in response to situations ranging from natural disasters to complex humanitarian emergencies. It is one component of Canada's toolkit to respond to natural disasters abroad.

The DART is equipped to conduct emergency relief operations for up to approximately 40 days to bridge the gap until national and international aid agencies arrive to provide long-term help. Working alongside local authorities and other international organizations and agencies, DART acts as a stabilization measure until regular services are restored. Mobility of the DART is supported by the CC-177 Globemaster III, which helps provide everything from the rapid delivery of troops and cargo transport to oversized equipment anywhere in the world.
