Media Advisory: Governor General to Award 2013 Massey Medal
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 11/12/13 -- His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada and patron of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS), will award the 2013 Massey Medal to Dr. David Ley, professor at the University of British Columbia. The award will be presented during the RCGS Awards Ceremony, prior to the RCGS College of Fellows Annual Dinner, on Wednesday, November 13, 2013, at 5 p.m., at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, in Gatineau, Quebec.
A social and urban geographer, Mr. Ley is known for his formative research on 'gentrification' in North American cities. He is also recognized for his work as the founding director of the Vancouver Metropolis Centre of Excellence, an interdisciplinary research centre founded in 1996. More recently, his research has focused on immigration and the geopolitical events and political economy driving migration policy, which culminated in the publication of his 10th book, Millionaire Migrants, in 2010.
During this ceremony, His Excellency will also present the Canadian Polar Commission's Northern Science Award; the Innovation in Geography Teaching Award; the Geographic Literacy Award; the 3M Environmental Innovation Award; the Martin Bergmann Medal; the Sir Christopher Ondaatje Medal for Exploration; and two Gold Medals.
About the Massey Medal
Each year, the Massey Medal is awarded in recognition of outstanding career achievement in the exploration, development or description of the geography of Canada. Awarded for the first time by Governor General Vincent Massey in 1959, the medal is administered by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society.
