Statement by Minister of State Poilievre on the Supreme Court of Canada Hearings on Senate Reform
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 11/12/13 -- The Honourable Pierre Poilievre, Minister of State (Democratic Reform), today issued the following statement:
"Today marks the opening of the hearings in the Supreme Court for our Government's reference on the Senate. Our Government has asked the top Court for a legal instruction manual on Senate reform and Senate abolition. Canadians have waited 146 years for the Senate to change. This reference to our nation's top jurists will light the way."
The Government set out the arguments for the questions raised in the reference in its factum, which focuses on the appropriate amending procedures for Senate reform. The reference includes questions on the Government's Senate reform legislation and a broader range of reforms that could be contemplated in the future.
The opinion of the Supreme Court will allow the Government to move forward by providing clarity on the appropriate amending procedures as part of its long-standing commitment to transform the Senate into a more democratic institution.
