Chartwell's National Senior Star Finale took place on Tuesday night at the Scotiabank Convention Centre in Niagara Falls, Ontario. 74-year old Edward Vokurka from Toronto, Ontario was crowned 2013 Senior Star winner thanks to a spectacular violin rendition of Summertime by George Gershwin.
Edward Vokurka, a resident of Toronto's Bloor West Village, graduated with honours from the Public Conservatory of Music in Prague and has won a variety of musical competitions and awards throughout his life. Music, he says, is what keeps him mentally and physically fit in his retirement years, and allows him to remain socially active and engaged with his community. While Edward worked for almost 30 years as an electrical engineering professor at Humber College, he never missed an opportunity to entertain in Toronto jazz clubs and festivals, and even had the pleasure of performing with the legendary jazz violinist, maestro Joe Venuti. Confident, yet humble, he commanded the stage with an electric presence that captivated both the judges and audience members.
"I'm so grateful for the opportunity to be recognized for my talent and I'm still very optimistic that I have many years of entertaining ahead of me," said Edward. "This competition truly showcases the incredible aptitude of seniors in Canada and the influence that we can still have by being active members of our community."
The evening was a remarkable display of talent, as the 10 finalists delivered unforgettable performances in front of nearly 900 mesmerized audience members. With the help of vocal coach Dan Clancy, the finalists impressed celebrity judges including Canadian icon Gordie Tapp, recording artist Tim Louis and beloved Canadian pop singer and musical theatre actress Patsy Gallant. Doreen Johnson from Brantford, Ontario and Elliot Norman from Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec placed second and third respectively, with moving performances that drew tremendous crowd support.
Senior Star, now in its 7th year, has given thousands of seniors a chance to fulfill their dreams in front of family, friends and the community. "This competition provides an opportunity for anyone over the age of 65 to share their passion and gift with others," said Brent Binions, President and CEO of Chartwell. "We never expected to find such extraordinary talent across the country and we're blown away each year by the quality of performers that this competition brings."
