Vega Voluntarily Withdraws Selected Vega One Shakes and Sport Performance Protein Products
Consumers May Return Withdrawn Products for Full Refunds
(firmenpresse) - VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwired) -- 11/06/13 -- Vega, a plant-based natural health products company, today announced a voluntary withdrawal of 108 lots of its Vega One Nutritional Shake and Sport Performance Protein products distributed in Canada due to trace amounts of a naturally occurring antibiotic.
"We are taking this step in an abundance of caution," said Vega President and Founder, Charles Chang. "The scientific research shows our products are safe, but we have agreed with government regulators to withdraw these two specific products to alleviate any concern."
The products entered the market in July. Vega has never received a consumer complaint about the products.
Last week, Vega announced that consumers who purchased the products containing the lot codes listed at the website may return them for a refund.
"We apologize for any inconvenience or confusion this may have caused our loyal customers. You have reminded us that the most important issue is maintaining your trust and confidence in our products," Chang said. "We have heard you loud and clear, and are working collaboratively with Health Canada to fully resolve this matter."
The voluntary withdrawal comes after a third-party supplier informed Vega that an enzyme used in its supplement potentially contained chloramphenicol (CAP), an antibiotic that is commonly used around the world for eye infections and typhoid fever.
The enzyme constitutes less than 1% of Vega's formula. The leading scientific expert on CAP concluded that the products "pose no risk whatsoever for consumers over a lifetime of exposure." In fact, a person would have to consume 100 million servings of the nutritional shake in a single day to meet the equivalent of one therapeutic dose of this antibiotic.
Vega voluntarily reported the issue and provided its findings to Health Canada, which on November 1 sent an alert that led to concern among some Vega consumers. Prior to the alert, Vega had secured a new supply of enzymes free of CAP. As a result, Vega has no longer been distributing any product made with the enzyme blend containing CAP.
As for consumers in the United States, Vega has proactively reached out to the Food and Drug Administration and is now awaiting the agency's determination. Once Vega hears back from the FDA, it will notify consumers of the results.
Vega is committed to working with its valued customers, consumers and retailers to take back any product from the lot codes listed on . If consumers have any questions, they can call Vega at 1-866-839-8863 between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pacific, Monday through Friday, or email inquiries to .
