Convenience Stores Applaud Harper Government for Action on Contraband Tobacco

ID: 1279735

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 11/05/13 -- The Canadian Convenience Stores Association (CCSA) applauded the Harper Government for its commitment to fighting contraband tobacco, following the reintroduction of legislation aimed at combatting trafficking and cross-border smuggling of contraband tobacco.

"Bill S-16 is a significant victory for Canada's convenience store owners, who are tasked with upholding many of Canada's federal and provincial laws and regulations on the controlled sale of legal tobacco, but also a necessary resource for the RCMP so that they can continue to keep our communities safe," said Alex Scholten, President of the Canadian Convenience Stores Association.

The CCSA has been actively working with Federal parliamentarians and the RCMP to communicate the need for tougher penalties and additional enforcement to deter contraband tobacco offenders. The Association is hopeful this legislation will make traffickers of contraband think twice before selling this illegal product.

Contraband tobacco poses a serious threat to community safety in all regions of Canada, through its ties to organized crime, its link to drugs and illegal weapons trafficking, as well as the accessibility of illegal tobacco by minors. "In order for this legislation to be truly effective, it must be complemented by enforcement, and specifically, the establishment of the promised 50 RCMP officers dedicated to contraband tobacco," said Scholten.

The CCSA will continue to advocate for additional enforcement, as well as comprehensive fine recovery for repeat illegal tobacco offenders. "We have seen too many cases of fines going uncollected, and believe active fine recovery would not only deter offenders, but also assist in recouping lost funds which could be put towards valuable government services," stated Scholten.

"We applaud Minister MacKay and Minister Ambrose for today's announcement, and look forward to continuing our dialogue with all levels of government as we look to eliminate contraband tobacco from Canadian communities."
