Audi is recruiting some of America's brightest undergraduates to take part in a unique student program that will address future mobility concerns of megacities around the world.

The Audi Future of Mobility Practicum will initially engage 12 students in a six-week practicum next summer at AUDI AG headquarters in Ingolstadt, Germany. Those finalists will explore innovative concepts of how cars will be used in the more densely packed and chaotic urban environments expected to arise a generation from now. The program will be modeled on existing Audi internship programs, but will be available only to U.S.-based undergraduate students pursuing degrees in forward-looking fields, such as engineering, design and computer science.

The goal of the program is to investigate future automotive opportunities in topics as wide ranging as Big Data, sensors, electric vehicles, safety engineering and urban planning.

At the end of the six-week practicum, two students with the most inventive concepts will be offered a six-month internship to further develop their ideas with the Audi Technical Development team in Germany, which has been investigating issues that will shape personal transportation in the years ahead.

"Societies around the world have enjoyed great benefits from personal transportation," said Peter Kainz, Head of Pre-development Vehicle Concepts at AUDI AG. "At the same time, navigating through the world's burgeoning urban areas has become more stressful, chaotic and time consuming. Our aim is to begin tackling this reality with creative insights from America's best young minds."

The application period for undergraduate students interested in the Audi Future Mobility Practicum opened October 25, 2013 and closes November 30, 2013. The 12 finalists for next summer's six-week fellowship will be selected in December 2013 and announced at CES in January 2014. Full details on the practicum, including how to apply, are available at . Interested undergraduates are encouraged to submit a creative multimedia brief to bolster their applications.

AUDI AG has a long history of partnerships with top American universities, including Stanford University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Michigan.

The Audi Future of Mobility Practicum tracks with an ongoing U.S. university research project called Audi Urban Intelligent Assist, or AUIA. Its goal is to develop technology that effectively creates a car that can tell the future -- and get motorists to their destinations via the least stressful routes possible in crowded megacity traffic conditions.

AUIA involves AUDI AG engineers, researchers working for Audi at the Volkswagen Group's Electronics Research Lab in Belmont, Calif., as well as teams from the University of Southern California, the University of California - San Diego and the University of California - Berkeley PATH program.

Together, the members of the AUIA team are devising systems that can tap into data streams that allow an Audi car to forecast past and current road conditions, plus future probabilities to plot safe and efficient commutes. The teams are also working on systems that will allow a future Audi to learn from individual motorists' routes and habits behind the wheel to help minimize risks in chaotic road conditions.

Audi of America, Inc. and its U.S. dealers offer a full line of German-engineered luxury vehicles. AUDI AG is among the most successful luxury automotive brands globally. Audi was a top-performing luxury brand in Europe during 2012, and broke all-time company sales records in the U.S. Through 2016, AUDI AG will invest about $17 billion on new products, facilities and technologies.
