Media Advisory: Professional Institute to Hold 94th Annual General Meeting in Ottawa This Week on November 8 and 9, 2013
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 11/04/13 -- Beginning Friday, November 8, one week after Conservative Party of Canada convention delegates adopted the party's most controversial resolutions yet against unions and federal government employees, the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC), the country's largest union representing federal government professionals, will hold its 94th Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Ottawa.
Since their last AGM, PIPSC members have faced an increasingly hostile work environment characterized by deep ongoing cuts to federal government jobs, services and programs; the muzzling of federal scientists; the targeting of union finances through Bill C-377; and the misrepresentation of federal employee sick leave, to name only a few of the Institute's concerns. This year's AGM is especially important since a majority of PIPSC groups will see their collective agreements expire in 2014.
Better government accountability, transparency and democracy will be among the key issues discussed this year. In addition, former Parliamentary Budget Officer (PBO) Kevin Page will be the keynote speaker, and he will be presented with a special "Public Accountability" award by members of the Institute. Delegates attending the AGM will also participate in a debate on a proposed dues increase, and will hear presentations from presidential candidates prior to the election scheduled for early December.
PIPSC members will also be presented with a new member engagement initiative aimed at defending professional public services and motivating both members and the general public to work "Better Together."
The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada represents some 55,000 professionals and scientists across Canada's public sector.
