Canada Leads First International Working Group on Open Data
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 10/31/13 -- The Honourable Tony Clement, President of the Treasury Board, today announced as part of the 2013 Open Government Partnership Summit held in London, England, that Canada will co-chair the newly created International Open Data Working Group. Canada assumes the leadership role alongside the Web Foundation, with participation from key governments and civil society organizations from around the world.
"Open Data is truly an opportunity to spur innovation and economic growth and improve the lives of everyday citizens," said Minister Clement. "Canada, along with its international partners, is at the forefront of unlocking the global potential of Open Data."
The Open Government Partnership represents a dynamic and burgeoning global movement to make government more accessible, accountable and transparent. The Working Group's mission is to identify and share good practices and standards to help governments implement their existing Open Data commitments and develop more ambitious and innovative action plans for Open Data.
Since joining the Open Government Partnership, Canada has launched an enhanced , and introduced a new that allows for unrestricted commercial and non-commercial re-use of government data available on the Portal. Recently the Government of Canada announced plans for a forthcoming national Open Data appathon, the Canadian Open Data Experience (CODE).
"Canada has made important progress in meeting its Open Government commitments, contributing to social and economic growth and innovation," said Minister Clement. "The milestones Canada has reached are informed by the participation and feedback of civil society. This has been a key element for our success to date, and one we will continue to maintain in future Open Data activities."
