Construction Association Calls on Federal and Provincial Governments to Act on Labour Issues

ID: 1277245

(firmenpresse) - EDMONTON, ALBERTA -- (Marketwired) -- 10/29/13 -- Stephen Kushner, President of Merit Contractors Association - Canada's largest organization of open shop construction contractors - says the results of today's Leger survey of Canadian workers and their attitudes on financial disclosure, use of union dues, restrictive tendering and workplace democracy reaffirm the need for federal and provincial legislators to take action on these issues.

Kushner stated, "The Leger survey conducted for the Canadian LabourWatch Association is timely because of pending Private Members Bills C-377 and C-525 in Ottawa and the 2012 PC Party Election Platform proposing to introduce a Paycheque Protection, Transparency and Freedom to Choose Act in Alberta."

He continues, "The 2013 results are consistent with previous Canada wide surveys conducted by the Canadian Labour Watch Association in 2008 and 2011 and mirror the results of research conducted in Alberta in 2012"

The survey confirms there is strong support to increase the transparency of union financial disclosure as contemplated in Bill C-377, which is currently before the Canadian Senate. Over 8 out of 10 working Canadians, including a majority of unionized workers, believe it should be mandatory for all unions to publically disclose their finances. An overwhelming majority (93%) also believe that workers should have access to union financial information during a unionization drive.

Similarly, more than 8 of 10 workers believe that federal government employees or those working in federally regulated industries should have a secret ballot vote in any union representation election.

Consistent with past surveys, only 18% of those polled, support mandatory dues being spent to fund attack ads against political parties such as the "No Plan" attack ads that were run by various Alberta unions during the 2008 provincial election. Relatively few workers also supported union dues being used to make contributions to political parties and third party social advocacy groups.

According to Kushner, "These survey results indicate that Canadian and Albertan workers clearly support measures that would provide more transparency with respect to financial disclosure and have greater individual choice in supporting or not supporting union activities. It is abundantly clear that both the Federal and Provincial governments would be acting in the interests of workers by acting on these issues."
