Canadian Army Commander Meets Counterparts from Across the Americas in Mexico

ID: 1276290

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 10/25/13 -- Lieutenant-General Marquis Hainse, Commander of the Canadian Army, joined commanders of armies from within the Western Hemisphere at the Commanders' Conference of American Armies from October 21 to 25 in Mexico City, Mexico.

"The Conference of American Armies supports two of the Canadian Armed Forces' three core roles, which are to defend North America and contribute to international peace and security," said the Hon. Rob Nicholson, Minister of National Defence. "Our participation at such international venues will strengthen hemispheric defence relationships, and demonstrate Canada's commitment to building capacity and nurturing partnerships in the Western Hemisphere."

Chaired this year by General Salvador Cienfuegos, the Commander of the Mexican Army, the Commanders' Conference of American Armies provided a venue for commanders to share their experiences and lessons-learned with their counterparts. The overall aim of these discussions is to improve the collective interoperability and capabilities of all members.

"The Mexican Army organized a very successful conference, providing all participants with an excellent opportunity to deepen relationships and further strengthen defence and security partnerships," said Lt.-Gen. Hainse. "Meeting with other army commanders to debate and exchange ideas and experiences is what enables us to remain connected. Such direct engagement between military leaders ensures a common understanding of issues facing land forces in the region."

Commanders had an opportunity to brief colleagues on their nations' respective military activities carried out in 2012, including peacekeeping operations, disaster relief and humanitarian assistance operations that fell under various United Nations mandates.

The Conference of American Armies was founded in 1968 with the aim of analyzing, debating and exchanging ideas and experiences related to matters of common interest in the field of defence. Canada joined as an observer army in 1991, and became a full member in 1993. The Conference of American Armies is comprised of 20 member armies: Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago, United States, Uruguay and Venezuela, along with five observer armies and two observer military organizations.
