Minister Kenney Highlights Canada as a Safe, Secure and Responsible Energy Supplier
(firmenpresse) - CALGARY, ALBERTA -- (Marketwired) -- 10/25/13 -- Today, the Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Employment and Social Development and Minister for Multiculturalism, on behalf of the Honourable Joe Oliver, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, delivered remarks at this year's World Petroleum Council Youth Forum in Calgary.
During his address, Minister Kenney highlighted that the energy sector directly supports hundreds of thousands of jobs across Canada and generates an average of more than $26 billion per year in royalty and tax revenues, supporting social programs like health care and education.
"Our government will continue to implement the policies that are making Canada and Canada's resource sectors the most attractive destinations for investment in the world," said Minister Kenney. "This is especially true for Canada's petroleum industry - an industry that is world-class in every respect: in resources, in innovation, in environmental responsibility and in opportunity for Canadians and investors alike."
Minister Kenney also emphasized the importance of the Government of Canada's plan for Responsible Resource Development, which places firm but reasonable beginning-to-end timelines on environmental reviews of major projects, eliminates the expensive and time-consuming duplication of reviews by different jurisdictions and strengthens environmental protection.
"Canada is proving that environmental responsibility can be the catalyst for technological innovation that increases both competitiveness and sustainability in the resource industry," explained Minister Kenney. "Greenhouse gas emissions per barrel of production in the oil sands were reduced by 26 percent between 1990 and 2011 - reducing not only the environmental impact of production but also reducing costs, and making Canada's resources more competitive on the world market."
