(firmenpresse) - VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA and OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 10/24/13 -- During Small Business Week®(1), the Certified General Accountants Association of Canada (CGA-Canada) is pleased to recognize the importance of Canada's small business sector, particularly in the area of international trade.

"Canada's small businesses make a substantial contribution to Canada's international trade performance, accounting for close to half the value of Canada's exports," says Anthony Ariganello, president and CEO of CGA-Canada. "The recently announced trade agreement with the European Union presents further opportunities for Canadian SMEs."

The export performance of Canada's small business sector is summarized in a recent report by CGA-Canada, The report also details some of the challenges SMEs face in growing and diversifying Canada's international trade.

"We are pleased that in the recent throne speech the federal government pledged to address the needs of SMEs by providing tax relief and cutting red tape," says Carole Presseault, vice-president of government and regulatory affairs at CGA-Canada.

During the coming months, CGA-Canada will continue to consult with export-oriented SMEs and other stakeholders. To learn more about CGA-Canada's ongoing research and consultation project on growing and diversifying Canadian SMEs' participation in international trade, visit:
