Media Advisory: Mass demonstration of CUPE solidarity with Quebec City blue collars
(firmenpresse) - QUEBEC CITY, QUEBEC -- (Marketwired) -- 10/22/13 -- More than 3,000 Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) members, including delegates to the union's national convention, will converge on the Quebec National Assembly on Wednesday afternoon to show their solidarity with the 1,100 members of Quebec City blue-collar employees union. The Syndicat des employes manuels de la Ville de Quebec (CUPE 1638) has been without a contract since December 31, 2010.
While Quebec City Mayor Regis Labeaume continues to attack municipal employees during his election campaign, CUPE members from across the country will join the city's bl ue-collar workers to demand the return of the employer to the negotiating table.
"With attacks on wages, working conditions, and pensions on the rise, workers from across Canada must stand together," said Paul Moist, national president of CUPE. "The Quebec blue-collar workers can depend on the full support of CUPE and its hundreds of thousands of Canadian members."
CUPE National Secretary-Treasurer Charles Fleury, CUPE Quebec President Lucie Levasseur, and the president of the Quebec City blue-collar employees' union, Daniel Simard, will also be speaking at the demonstration.
CUPE is Canada's largest union, representing more than 627,000 members across the country, including more than 111,000 in Quebec. The CUPE's 50th anniversary national convention is taking place at the Quebec City Convention Centre from October 21 to 25.
