International Energy Agency Report Recognizes Canada as Energy Efficiency World Leader

ID: 1273173

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 10/16/13 -- The Honourable Joe Oliver, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, today issued a statement on the International Energy Agency's (IEA) first Energy Efficiency Market Report.

"Today's report once again emphasizes the important role that energy efficiency has to play in meeting global energy demand. I am pleased to see that the IEA has once again recognized Canada as a world leader in energy efficiency. The IEA's Energy Efficiency Market Report 2013 ranks Canada second, along with the United Kingdom, for its rate of energy efficiency improvement between 1990 and 2010. It also highlights Canada's successful energy efficiency programs, which provide consumers with greater market choices and help industry reduce costs and improve the bottom line.

"The report notes: 'Economy-wide efficiency improvements between 1990 and 2010 resulted in over CAD$32 billion of avoided energy expenditure in 2010, and saved an amount of energy equivalent to the total Canadian electricity production in 2010.' The report also states that 'despite a steady growth in energy consumption, Canada's energy efficiency has improved by 25.3 percent since 1990.'

"Canada is committed to improving energy efficiency to help Canadian consumers and businesses lower costs, save energy and protect the environment. The IEA recognizes that Canada is the first country to adopt ISO 50001 as the national standard for energy management systems for industry. The standard is saving businesses money and improving their ability to compete in global markets.

"Our government is helping put money back into the pockets of Canadian consumers by continually improving energy efficiency. Canada has invested substantially in energy efficiency initiatives - including minimum standards for over 40 products; regulations to improve fuel efficiency for passenger automobiles, light trucks and heavy-duty vehicles and engines; and more stringent energy codes for buildings.

"While Canada has consistently acted to improve efficiency and reduce emissions, we recognize that more needs to be done. Our government will continue these efforts by working closely with our partners to further improve energy efficiency standards."
