Save the Children Launches Appeal to Provide Vital Relief to Families Affected by Cyclone Phailin

ID: 1272610

(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 10/15/13 -- Save the Children has launched an initial appeal of CDN$ 3.6 million (INR 21 million), to fund its emergency response to Cyclone Phailin, which battered India's Eastern coast last weekend.

Thomas Chandy, the CEO of Save the Children India, said, "Given the size and intensity of this cyclone, things could have been a lot worse, and it is without doubt that evacuation activities helped protect thousands of lives. But this should not overshadow that thousands of families have had their homes and livelihoods destroyed by the cyclone, and it is vital that those affected receive the support they need as soon as possible, so that they can return and rebuild their homes and lives."

Save the Children is supporting the Indian Government-led response, and working with partners to help an estimated 35,000 people. Save the Children's teams are on the ground in the worst-affected areas of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, and have distributed emergency hygiene kits, food baskets, blankets and solar lamps for families who have been caught up in the disaster.

With the money raised, it will establish child-friendly spaces which offer educational and psychological support for children caught up in the disaster, as well as distribute emergency house-hold kits and cash support to the most vulnerable families.
