Canada and Japan Mark New Milestone in Bi-Lateral Energy Relationship

ID: 1271929

(firmenpresse) - VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwired) -- 10/11/13 -- The Honourable Joe Oliver, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, and Toshimitsu Motegi, Japan's Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, today signed a 'Statement on Oil and Gas Cooperation' that enhances cooperation between Canada and Japan on bi-lateral energy matters. This Statement builds on discussions between Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan, during their meeting in Ottawa in September.

"This strategic energy partnership between Canada and Japan will enhance Canadian jobs and economic prosperity, while addressing Japan's growing energy demands," said Minister Oliver. "I am pleased to sign this Statement, which represents another milestone in Canada's energy relationship with our close friend and ally."

The agreement supports Canada's strategic imperative of expanding and diversifying our energy export markets, and facilitates important initiatives to be pursued moving forward between the two governments.

Among the results of this agreement, is the establishment of a policy dialogue and annual high-level meeting between governments to encourage cooperation on trade and investment opportunities in oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG).

This policy dialogue and annual meeting will specifically address the development of related infrastructure such as ports, pipelines, re-gasification plants and liquefaction terminals, as well as facilitate the exchange of information on energy policies, potential of energy supply, market outlooks, interprovincial pipeline issues, marine safety, environmental regulation and other topics of mutual interest.

Minister Oliver previously visited Japan in November 2011 and September 2012 to reinforce Canada's position as a responsible, secure energy supplier and our commitment to supporting bilateral trade and investment.

Today's announcement, which followed a bilateral meeting between the two ministers, launches Minister Oliver's sixth visit to Asia, during which he will travel to South Korea from October 11 to 16 and China from October 17-18. The Minister will deliver a keynote speech at the World Energy Congress, the Canada-Korea Energy Dialogue and the Canada-China Energy and Environment Forum, as well as meet with senior government officials and energy industry executives to reinforce Canada's energy market diversification priorities within the Asia-Pacific region.
