Everybody loves a hearty dinner at Thanksgiving, and this proved especially true at Our Place as Victoria's most vulnerable citizens took part in a special family meal.

Volunteers, including numerous local politicians from every level of government, served 1,125 hearty turkey dinners during lunchtime at Our Place on Pandora Avenue on Thursday, Oct. 10. While waiting in line, Our Place family members were treated to hot chocolate, followed by a full course meal of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, fresh garden vegetables, gravy and cranberry sauce. Pumpkin pie and coffee topped everything off with sweet applause.

"If this is the only Thanksgiving meal I get, I'm well satisfied," said Mark, an Our Place family member. "The turkey was so fresh, better than a restaurant, and the vibe so good."

"Good ambiance," added Janet, another family member. "I didn't feel rushed. It was so nice. And the servers were so nice, too."

Brian Cox, food service manager, was quick to praise his team. "Our volunteers did an amazing job in making this a special occasion for the record number of family members we served over the three hour lunch period."

"The number of people served shows how great the need is for the most vulnerable citizens of Greater Victoria," said Don Evans, executive director of Our Place. "And the smile we saw on everyone's face as they enjoyed their meal shows how much it was appreciated."

Our Place is a community centre serving Greater Victoria's most vulnerable: working poor, impoverished elderly, individuals with mental health and physical challenges, and the homeless. It provides 45 transitional housing units, over 1,200 meals per day, hot showers, free clothing, counseling and outreach services. Most importantly, it provides a sense of hope and belonging to our neighbours in need.
