Giving Thanks for Family at Our Place
Local politicians join Our Place to serve over 1,000 Thanksgiving meals to the city's homeless and working poor on Oct. 10
(firmenpresse) - VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwired) -- 10/09/13 -- Local politicians will be joining Our Place volunteers and staff to make everyone feel like family this Thanksgiving.
Around 1,000 of Victoria's most vulnerable citizens are expected to join Our Place's family table for a special Thanksgiving meal on Thursday, Oct. 10 through the generous support of donors, community groups and volunteers. Local politicians such as MP Randall Garrison, MLAs Carole James, Rob Flemming, Andrew Weaver and Maurine Karagianis; Colwood Mayor Carol Hamilton, plus representatives from the City of Victoria, Central Saanich and more will all be rolling up their sleeves to dish out a full meal of turkey, potatoes, garden veg and all the trimmings.
"Thanksgiving is a special time to be with loved ones. For many of the people we welcome, we're the closest family they have," says Don Evans, executive director of Our Place. "We want everyone to feel a sense of belonging and enjoy a great meal."
Keeping it local, several of the ingredients will be harvested on Wednesday, Oct. 9 from the Small Steps Edible Garden in Centennial Square that was planted by Our Place Society staff, family members and volunteers.
Those fresh fall vegetables will add to a hearty meal consisting of 1,000 lbs of turkey, 500 lbs of potatoes, 250 lbs of stuffing, 200 lbs of vegetables, 25 gallons of gravy, 55 lbs of cranberry sauce, 125 pumpkin pies and 1,500 cups of coffee.
Great Photo/Video Opportunity: On Thursday, Oct. 10, local politicians will help dish up a delicious meal from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. that is expected to serve around 1,000 members of Victoria's less fortunate citizens. (And if you want a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to prepare this many hearty meals, you're invited to arrive early and talk with our dedicated kitchen staff, headed up by Brian Cox, Manager of Food Services.)
Our Place is a community centre serving Greater Victoria's most vulnerable: working poor, impoverished elderly, individuals with mental health and physical challenges, and the homeless. It provides 45 transitional housing units, over 1,200 meals per day, hot showers, free clothing, counseling and outreach services. Most importantly, it provides a sense of hope and belonging to our neighbours in need.
