(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 10/09/13 -- United Nations Women National Committee Canada (UNWNCC) celebrates the International Day of the Girl Child, with focus this year on "innovating for girls' education." Universal education is crucial to gender equality and women's empowerment. It is also fundamental to democracy and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.

Almas Jiwani, President, stated: "Every child has a right to equality and dignity. Education is a way to empower girls and lay the foundation for gender equality in all societies. UNWNCC will continue to work with our partners today and every day of the year to ensure that education is available to those children who are most vulnerable."

School enrollment rates around the world continue to rise, however, girls are often subject to gender-based violence and discrimination that prevent them from attending school. Furthermore, poverty remains a systemic barrier that deprives all children of their right to an education.

UN Women and UNWNCC fully support the UN Secretary-General's Global Education First initiatives and its three priorities to put every child to school, to improve the quality of learning, and foster global citizenship. UN Women has also announced the roll-out of a new initiative to prevent violence against girls. "Voices against Violences" will be delivered by the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in 145 countries.
