Canadian Indigenous Chiefs and Delegation in London to Mark the Royal Proclamation of 1763
(firmenpresse) - LONDON -- (Marketwired) -- 10/04/13 -- The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN) delegation arrived in London today, where they took a day to rest and get oriented to their surroundings.
Meanwhile, Perry Bellegarde, Chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations, visited Oxford University yesterday. Following a private social dinner with college fellows (faculty) and a tour of the University, Chief Bellegarde was invited to the 'high table'.
"Such an invitation is intended to honour the invitee and, at the same time, enrich the experience of college fellows (faculty)," said Professor John Milloy of Trent University (Peterborough, Ontario, Canada), who is accompanying the FSIN delegation as an historical advisor. "It is indeed a high honour."
Conversation touched on many subjects, ranging from common interests such as the environment and energy development to the fact that the Royal Proclamation of 1763 is a foundational document to the legal framework in Canada. The need to look at new mechanisms in Canada for Treaty Implementation and Enforcement of the terms of treaties in accordance with the original spirit and intent was also discussed.
Discussion also revolved around the relevance of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the need for industry and both federal and provincial governments to consult and accommodate indigenous peoples' interests when dealing with resource developments, moving toward formal resource revenue sharing agreements to alleviate poverty and its effects as experienced by First Nations people in Canada.
"It was an honour to be invited to Oxford University," said Chief Bellegarde. "I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with Sir Curtis Price, the college fellows and sharing experiences. We had some really lively discussions and built alliances with people who will support our endeavours to ensure that human rights are upheld for indigenous peoples in Canada."
Tomorrow, the FSIN delegation will be talking part in a Wreath-laying and Pipe Ceremony honouring First Nations loyalty and defence of the Crown. Ceremonies start at 11:30 am at the Great War Memorial: Guards Chapel, Birdcage Walk, London.
The FSIN represents 74 First Nations in Saskatchewan. The Federation is committed to honouring the spirit and intent of Treaty, as well as the promotion, protection and implementation of the Treaty promises that were made more than a century ago.
