Minister Finley at 2013 Best Defence Conference
The Government of Canada continues to buy smart to support job creation, innovation and increased opportunities for Canadian businesses
(firmenpresse) - LONDON, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 10/03/13 -- Today, at the 2013 Best Defence Conference in London, Ontario, the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Public Works and Government Services, highlighted the Government's Economic Action Plan 2013 commitment to create jobs, growth and long-term prosperity. This year's conference theme is excellence in defence systems.
In her speech, the Minister provided updates on the Government's efforts to better leverage military procurement spending to drive the growth and export potential of the Canadian defence industry, while ensuring the Canadian Armed Forces get the equipment they need to do their job. She also mentioned Public Works and Government Services Canada's , which brings Canadian businesses one step closer to moving their innovations into domestic and international markets.
"We're working hard to find better ways to serve Canadians and to ensure that we're doing everything we can to encourage Canadian business growth and innovation by focusing on maintaining and encouraging a strong defence industry in Canada," said Minister Finley. "One way that we can make this type of progress is through the use of value propositions, by weighting and rating their value to Canada in terms of job creation, innovation, intellectual property transfer and export potential."
Minister Finley also referred to the Government of Canada's initiative, which was developed by listening to business. It means early engagement with industry, good governance to inform when and how decisions are made, and the use of independent third-party advice to enable the Government to make the best decisions. In this way, Smart Procurement supports job creation in Canada, innovation and increased opportunities for suppliers, including small- and medium-sized businesses.
"I don't need to tell you that earlier industry engagement is key. It's been working-and we're going to keep it up," added Minister Finley.
Since her appointment to the file, Minister Finley has been engaging with business and industry across Canada to find ways to improve procurement and maximize job creation; to support Canadian manufacturing capabilities to innovate, develop and sell leading-edge products and services; and to bolster economic growth in Canada.
The Best Defence Conference is a networking event that helps the defence industry identify opportunities in the Canadian and global defence marketplaces. It is organized by the Canadian Association of Defence and Security Industries and the London Economic Development Corporation.
