"The Trouble with Dying" Documentary Puts Spotlight on the Renewed Debate over Legalization of Euthanasia in Canada

ID: 1269326

Documentary Focuses on Re-ignited Debate, the Forces That Drive the Issue Forward and the Perspective of Individuals Facing Death from Critical Illness

(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 10/03/13 -- Politicians, judges and medical professionals are at the centre of a growing and renewed debate in Canada over the legality of Euthanasia. Whether you call it medically assisted dying, hastening death or assisted suicide, depends upon your perspective on the issue. However the legalization debate promises to become more contentious than ever in the coming months as legal challenges arise to the status quo, provincial actions are started to legalize the practice and the growing percentage of Canadians affected by chronic illness continues to grow larger each year. Recognizing the growing urgency of the debate, documentary film makers Holgate Production House are completing a year of filming with a hard hitting documentary entitled "" that looks at the issue from both sides. The documentary uniquely addresses the perspective of the chronically ill who wrestle with the choices they are making and the consequences of inaction or pursuit of illegal alternatives.

"The combination of an aging boomer generation, increasing levels of terminal illness and medical advances promises to make assisted suicide a dominant political concern in Canada. Add to that the announced plan to legalize the practice in Quebec and you have a powder keg that is about to explode", said Bryan Woodruff, Producer of the Trouble with Dying from Holgate Production House. "At Holgate we wanted to bring the personal perspective to the discussion and highlight how individuals faced with chronic illness can give us a window into a deeper understanding of the issues being debated."

The Trouble with Dying examines the current debate on euthanasia from the perspective of individuals who are personally affected by the political decisions society will make on this issue. The production asks the questions of how we choose to balance in society the sanctity of life with the desire to have a meaningful control over how life ends.

Highlights of the production includes the examination of the last days of Cindy Cowan, a 47 year old Toronto resident and advocate for legislative reform on Euthanasia, who lost her battle with ovarian cancer in 2013. The Holgate production team was able to document Cowan's life over the final months of her battle and probe deeply into the questions surrounding her circumstance and the desire to see change take place in the laws surrounding medically assisted death in this country.

The documentary also uses an undercover team to expose how assisted death is currently undertaken in back alleys away from public view on the streets of Tijuana, Mexico. The Holgate production team takes viewers behind the scenes to witness the illegal procurement of veterinary medications that are often used illegally to create a pain free method of death.

Combining these perspectives with the commentary of leaders of all sides in the current debate, the Trouble with Dying gives Canadians a unique and timely perspective into an issue that is expected to increasingly dominate the political agenda in the months and years to come.

"The Trouble with Dying is a film that will cause you to re-examine your own beliefs in this critical issue and motivate your action and concern in the public debate that is currently taking place," said Woodruff. "With the recent passing of Dr. Donald Lowe this past month and the Quebec provincial government's upcoming plans to enact legislation to make the practice legal we are starting to witness just the tip of the iceberg. We think the timing for this documentary could not be more appropriate."

Holgate Production House is hopeful that the film will serve to inform and support active public debate on this topic at a time when the impact of legal decisions and reform will so greatly impact the life choices of so many people in our society. The producers have worked closely with both sides in this debate to provide each with a meaningful opportunity to share their position and concerns in the debate in the hope that it will help to ignite broader engagement and involvement in this debate among all Canadians.

Holgate Productions is currently in negotiations with a number of broadcasters to confirm a firm broadcast date for the production but anticipates that they will finalize a date before the end of October 2013.
