Cystinosis Research Foundation Seeks Proposals to Improve Treatments, Patient Care; $1 Million Available
(firmenpresse) - IRVINE, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 10/02/13 -- The Cystinosis Research Foundation issued its and announced that $1 million is available in grants for research aimed at improving the care of cystinosis patients and developing new treatments to help the estimated 2,000 people, mostly children and young adults, who are affected by this rare, metabolic and fatal disease. The deadline to submit grant proposals is Oct. 25, 2013.
In patients with cystinosis the amino acid cystine abnormally accumulates in the cells due to a defective cystine transporter. Over time, the buildup of cystine destroys all organs in the body including the kidneys, muscles, eyes and central nervous system. Other complications include muscle wasting and difficulty swallowing.
The CRF is the world's largest funding source for cystinosis research. The foundation raised $2.2 million at its 11th annual Natalie's Wish Gala fundraiser earlier this year at the Balboa Bay Resort that drew 450 guests. Since 2003 the CRF has raised more than $22 million for research, funding 108 studies at leading research institutions in 11 countries. All research is aimed at discovering new treatments and a cure for the disease. One hundred percent of all donations go directly to research.
CRF-funded research is helping millions of people worldwide with well-known disorders and diseases such as Huntington's disease and NASH, a fatty liver disease. In addition, research discoveries made by CRF scientists are applicable to other rare lysosomal storage diseases, kidney diseases and corneal diseases.
Proposals are evaluated by the CRF Scientific Review Board, which is comprised of international experts on cystinosis. Using the National Institutes of Health scale of standards, these experts will advise the Cystinosis Research Foundation on the scientific merit of each proposal. Successful applicants will be notified in January 2014.
