Concession-Run Campgrounds and Day Use Areas in the USDA Forest Service Are Mostly Unaffected by Closure

(firmenpresse) - PHOENIX, AZ -- (Marketwired) -- 10/01/13 -- Most USDA Forest Service campgrounds, day use areas, and other recreation sites that are operated by private concessionaires remain open in the government shutdown. This includes popular Arizona sites such as Houston Mesa and Christopher Creek, near Payson; Crescent Moon / Red Rock Crossing, West Fork / Call of the Canyon, Cave Springs, and Manzanita near Sedona; Lake Mary, Lockett Meadow, Pinegrove, and Bonito near Flagstaff; Demotte and Jacob Lake just north of the Grand Canyon; and Rose Canyon Lake and Spencer Canyon on Mt. Lemmon near Tucson.

Private concession operators run hundreds of recreation areas within the National Forests, including the majority of the largest and most popular sites. This concession program, which is nearly thirty years old, helps the agency to reduce costs, in an era of declining budgets, while keeping high quality recreation options open to the public. Private companies operate under highly-structured agreements with detailed operating restrictions that ensure the character, quality, and environmental integrity of each recreation area is maintained.

"Remaining open during government shutdowns is a real benefit of the concession model the US Forest Service has pioneered," said Warren Meyer, CEO of Recreation Resource Management. "By taking these parks out of the appropriations process, private concession management makes them immune to all manner of budget shenanigans that tend to force public recreation closures."

It may be difficult for the public to determine if a particular facility is concession-run and therefore likely open during a government shutdown, particularly since the Recreation.gov web site appears to be closed. All of Recreation Resource Management's concession sites in Arizona will remain open, with a full listing at .
