Our Place Offers Shelter for Extreme Weather
To remain open overnight for homeless
(firmenpresse) - VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwired) -- 09/29/13 -- Our Place has flung open its doors today to offer shelter from the storm for Greater Victoria's most vulnerable as heavy rains and cold weather pound the city.
"This is when those without a roof over their heads or a warm place to huddle need us most," says Don Evans, Executive Director of Our Place Society at 919 Pandora Avenue.
Our Place is one of the few refuges that are open on Sundays, but due to the cold rains, the inner- city community centre has brought in extra volunteers and staff to keep its doors open all night, serving coffee, a hot meal - and a warm place to dry off.
Extreme weather can present a substantial threat to the life or health of people living on the street. Greater Victoria has been hit with nearly 50mm of rain with more on the way, including intense winds gusting up to 100 km/h in some places.
"Even after the winds die down, things are still expected to remain unsettled through Monday," says Monica Vaswani, a meteorologist with The Weather Network.
The Salvation Army at 525 Johnson Street has also opened its doors to provide additional shelter.
Our Place is a community centre serving Greater Victoria's working poor, the impoverished elderly, individuals with mental health and physical challenges and the homeless. It provides 45 transitional housing units, over 1,200 meals per day, hot showers, free clothing, counseling and outreach services. Most importantly, it provides a sense of hope and belonging to our neighbours in need.
