New York Hosted the Caspian Forum 2013, With a Focus on a Pipeline of Peace

(firmenpresse) - NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwired) -- 09/27/13 -- Construction of a huge pipeline bringing natural gas from Azerbaijan through Turkey to Europe due to begin next year, is expected to bring not just economic benefits to the countries involved but will also "contribute to peace and security," said attendees of forum held in New York Wednesday evening, organized by a think tank which conducts research on Caspian region.

The Trans Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline Project (TANAP) and the benefits it will bring to the region when it opens, scheduled to be in 2018, was the subject of the gathering attended by Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, and his counterparts from Azerbaijan, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Greece, Georgia and other countries.

The pipeline, also dubbed 'the silk road of energy' will help meet Europe's energy needs -- the continent currently imports almost 64 percent of its natural gas and this figure is due to rise to 80 percent by 2030.

The forum, hosted by US TV anchor and journalist Charlie Rose, was attended by energy professionals and experts in the field, there to discuss issues including how the gas from Central Asia should reach consumers in Europe at appropriate market prices. The theme: "A commitment to European Energy Security" was explored under Rose's moderation among the panel participants: Foreign Minister of Turkey Mr. Ahmet Davuto?lu; Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Mr. Elmar Mammadyarov; Deputy Minister of Greece Mr. Dimitrios Kourkoulas; Foreign Minister of Georgia Ms. Maia Panjikidze; US Special Envoy and Coordinator, Bureau of Energy Resources Mr. Carlos Pascual; EU Special Representative for Central Asia Ms. Patricia Flor.

Bosnian Foreign Minister also said that after a meeting on the margins of 68th UN General Assembly session that Ahmet Davutoglu, his Serbian counterpart Ivan Mrkic and himself -- this Balkan "troika" have agreed to have a ministerial meeting in Belgrade in December.





Davutoglu said that the Southern Gas Corridor project will unite countries and become a reliable ground for energy and political cooperation, and therefore the energy security of Europe is "the best alternative of the current reality." He added that the project will affect the world energy market.

The Caspian Forum 2013 brought together representatives from a number of international organizations, financial institutions, think-tanks and universities.
